From the collection of thousands of photographs and articles, to memorabilia from Rock County's ten communities and artifacts of early settlers, pioneers and community builders, the Rock County Historical Society preserves the history of our county and the people who developed it.
The Herman Motor building, built in 1915 by R.B. Hinkly, is a part of that history. It is fitting and proper that this is now the new home of the Rock County Historical Society and is called the HISTORY CENTER. With the change of name we believe the new location will portray more of the history of Rock County and not just a collection of artifacts. The new site allows for more and larger exhibits and makes use of the large number of items that have been donated to the Society over the years. Along with the expansion of display space for the tem communities in Rock County, we have additional exhibits to portray our agricultural heritage, our educational foundations, religious history, and rotating exhibits of historic Rock County. The former showroom of the Herman Motor building is still be used at the present time for the display of the Luverne Automobile Company and Luverne Fire Apparatus.
We added a permanent display of 2,500 nutcrackers that were donated to the museum. The nutcracker room is always open and is another reason to visit the History Center.
NOW OPEN. WE HAVE NOW ADDED A STORE AT THE HISTORY CENTER CALLED THE "CHRISTMAS HAUS." IT SPECIALIZES IN A VARIETY OF HOLIDAY RELATED GIFTS FOR SALE. FROM NUTCRACKERS TO ORNAMENTS AND OTHER HOLIDAY ITEMS. THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE "CHRISTMAS HAUS."
The new History Center has plenty of handicapped and regular parking on site. There is also an expanded space for school groups, tours, and special programs and events. There will be a green space outside with an area for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful building that is a great addition to downtown Luverne.
We welcome any donations from visitors to this site who may wish to help us make our dream come true. We believeHISTORY MATTERS. Hours of operation: Tuesday - Saturday - 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
